As dry-type transformers are cooled by air rather than oil, the maintenance process is simple, quick and cost effective. Conventional oil cooled transformers need to have their oil regularly sampled, tested and analysed. This can be time consuming and costly. In contrast, the main focus in maintaining dry-type transformers is to remove dust that could prevent the circulating air from effectively removing heat from the unit. This can be done with equipment as basic as a leaf blower. As with any kind of transformer, it is of course necessary to engage a qualified technician to de-energise the transformer before cleaning can be conducted.
