Why is it important for termination points to be checked during maintenance?

An important part of the servicing of any transformer – including dry-type units – is the checking of termination points. These are required to be fastened to a certain predefined torque setting to prevent any partial discharge of electricity that could lead to heat build-up and other dangers. During the installation process, the terminals will be tightened to the required torque, but they can loosen over time due to factors like vibration. The torque of these connections therefore needs to be regularly measured and, if necessary, tightened to the level specified by the original equipment manufacturer.
