As demand grows for reliable electrical infrastructure across mining, industrial and commercial sectors, mini-substations are increasingly being installed to support new developments and upgrades. However, a concerning trend is emerging in parts of the market.
Some equipment being sold as “new” mini-substations may actually be refurbished units taken from decommissioned facilities, demolition sites or upgraded operations.
In many cases these units are simply cleaned, repainted and fitted with a new nameplate before being sold back into the market. While they may look new externally, critical internal components – including transformers, switchgear and protection systems – may already have years of operational history.
For companies investing in electrical infrastructure, this can create serious risks.

A genuine new mini-substation should come with full documentation and traceability, including:
- Manufacturer documentation and serial numbers
- Factory acceptance test (FAT) reports. Customers are encouraged to witness the FAT of transformers and complete minisubs.
- Engineering and design documentation
- Compliance certification and standards verification
- Quality assurance records
Without these, it becomes difficult to confirm the origin and condition of the equipment being supplied.
It is important to note that refurbished equipment does have a legitimate place in the market when it is correctly described and supplied for appropriate applications. The real issue arises when refurbished equipment is misrepresented as new, leaving buyers unaware of the risks.
