Why is checking the cooling systems a vital factor in transformer maintenance?

Regular maintenance on dry-type transformers ensures that there is no dust build up that undermines the air cooling process. Every transformer is designed to run at a certain temperature, and prolonged operation at higher temperatures will affect the integrity of the winding material. The premature degradation of this material will invariably shorten the life of a transformer, and undermine efforts to achieve the lowest total cost of ownership. As overheating is always a risk, the servicing of transformers should also include checking that the temperature probes are working accurately. This allows them to trigger an alarm if there is an unexpected temperature spike, and to trip the feed-in circuit breaker to the transformer in the event of severe over-heating.
