Due to their lack of oil as an insulator and coolant, dry-type transformers can be installed without any civils infrastructure. Oil cooled transformers typically need their own structures to be built, including bund walls to prevent any oil leakage from affecting the environment. There is also no need for fire detection and suppression systems when a dry-type transformer is installed. These systems are usually required with oil cooled transformers due to the risk of fire or explosion.
The safety of dry-type units also allows them to be positioned closer to the load – whether this is indoors or outdoors. This has a direct impact on the amount of cable required between the transformer and the load. When combined, the costs of civils work, fire systems and extended lengths of cable all add considerably to the cost of transformer installation. These costs can be avoided with the use of dry-type transformers.
