One of Africa’s leading copper mines has ordered almost 50 mini substations from Trafo Power Solutions, equipped with dry-type transformers. Dry-type transformers have traditionally been used indoors because of their intrinsic safety, but IP-rated enclosures now allow them to be used in a range of demanding outdoor applications. Trafo Power Solutions can design enclosures that keep out even fine coal dust, while still ensuring that the transformer is effectively cooled.
Getting three dry-type transformers 1,6 km underground at a South African mine recently posed a range of design and logistical challenges. Trafo Power Solutions was up to the task, and ensured a practical solution for even the large 3150 kVA unit in the order. Its design accommodated the strict weight and height restrictions without compromising performance and reliability.
