Dry-type transformers have traditionally been used indoors because of their intrinsic safety, but IP-rated enclosures now allow them to be used in a range of demanding outdoor applications. Getting three dry-type transformers 1,6 km underground at a South African mine recently posed a range of design and logistical challenges.
